Introduction to the Veteran’s Aid & Attendance Special Pension

What is the Aid & Attendance Special Pension?
There is a little known, tax free, pension benefit available to veterans and/or their surviving spouses with non-service connected disabilities. The Veterans Aide & Attendance Pension provides qualified veterans and surviving spouses, a tax free pension that helps pays for assistance received at home or in some cases, nursing homes or assisted-living facilities.

How does Best Care help?

In addition to providing carefully screened and qualified caregivers who provide needed assistance to veterans, Best Care also works closely with several consultants who specialize in assisting veterans and surviving spouses apply and qualify for the special pension.  There is NO obligation and NO cost to the Veteran or surviving spouse for application assistance and consulting.

How does it work?

  1. With the veteran’s permission, a consultant will contact the veteran or spouse to provide a preliminary phone consultation to discuss the basic eligibility requirements.***See below for details
  2. If the basic requirements are met, a face-to-face appointment will be scheduled to discuss and complete the application. In some instances, applicants may need to obtain additional information or make financial decisions necessary to qualify for the pension. In this case, additional phone calls and/or meetings may be required.
  3. Once complete, the application will be submitted to the Veterans Administration and the consultant will follow the process to completion.

How long does it take?

If all the required information is ready and available (see below), completing the application usually takes about an hour. Once the application is sent to the VA for processing, approval may take several months.

What if the veteran or spouse needs help NOW?

Once the veteran and or spouse has met with a consultant and the application has been submitted to the VA, it may be possible for the veteran or spouse to begin receiving aid and attendance services prior to formal approval for the pension. Contact A Plus for more information about this option.

Required Information for the application:

  1. Legible copy of the veteran’s honorable discharge and separation papers (if these have been lost, someone will help obtain copies)
  2. Surviving spouse applicants must also provide a copy of the marriage certificate and veteran’s death certificate
  3. Dates and location of birth, and marriage (when applicable)
  4. Applicants must disclose ALL sources of income, including Social Security, pension, interest, etc.
  5. Complete and accurate information regarding “liquid assets”, including bank accounts, investments, etc. The veteran’s home and car are not included but second homes or other investment properties are.
  6. Doctor’s name, address, phone and fax numbers. (The need for assistance must be confirmed by a doctor. The Aid & Attendance consultant will contact the doctor and provide the appropriate form for completion)

We honor our veterans for their service and consider it a privilege to serve them.
